How to play?
Look carefully. Count patiently. Trust nothing.
A Quasel is made from several separate shapes. Your task is simply to work out how many.
Simple?
Not always, especially in the white version.
Shapes pass over and under each other. A single shape may appear to split into several pieces. Several shapes may look like one. The trick is to follow each shape through the maze—and to keep track of what you've already counted.
Use whatever method works for you. Count in your head, point with your fingers, take a screenshot and mark it up digitally, or use a colouring app.
Please avoid printing the Quasel—or using a Sharpie on your tablet.
There is, however, one important rule:
Anything hidden behind another shape behaves naturally.
A hidden strand will never suddenly fork, make an impossible turn or connect to something unexpected while out of sight. Likewise, two strands disappearing behind the same obstacle will never secretly merge unless there is a visible clue that they do.
The same applies to coils. If a strand coils around another strand or shape, the coil is simply wrapped around it, without connecting. Any genuine connection will always be visible elsewhere. On the other hand, no matter how long or curved a coil is, the objects emerging from either end are always connected.
Take your time. Follow one shape at a time. Our eyes only have a very small focal point offering high resolution. Looking at the Quasel from further away can help seeing more of the image at the same time. If you lose track, start again from somewhere else. There is no time limit and no penalty for taking another look.
Most people become noticeably better after solving just a few Quasels. Your brain gradually learns what to look for and develops the ability to separate the shapes.
In a month's time you may even be able to tell that two elephants are not one.
